Description

Lomatia ferruginea, commonly known as Fuinque, is a small deciduous tree or large shrub that typically grows up to 8 meters tall. It is easily recognized by its distinctive, simple to lobed leaves, which are rusty-hairy underneath — a trait that gives the species its name (ferruginea meaning “rust-colored”). In summer, it produces small, pale yellow to cream-colored flowers arranged in slender clusters. Fuinque prefers the moist, temperate forests of southern Chile and thrives along shaded slopes and streambanks. It’s a subtle yet striking presence in the forest, valued for its elegant foliage and adaptability.
