Gloeosoma vitellinum often grows on decaying trunks and fallen branches, often in association with Nothofagus trees. Its fruiting body forms bright orange to orange-pink discs or crust-like patches, typically 3–6 cm in diameter.

The surface is smooth and slightly shiny, with a firm, cartilaginous consistency. Under the microscope, its spores are broadly ellipsoid and finely ornamented with spines, a characteristic feature of the species. While not commonly harvested, G. vitellinum has been reported as edible in some regions when properly cooked. They appear in autumn to winter.
